Junior Barrister employed by Christopher Griggs
Cassandra is an employment and civil litigation specialist. After graduating from the University of Otago with a BSc and a first-class honours degree in law, she was employed through the Government Legal Network by the Health and Disability Commissioner. Cassandra joined chambers in 2015 as junior to Peter Churchman QC. In 2017, she became Christopher Griggs’ junior following the elevation of Churchman J to the High Court bench. Cassandra also juniors other barristers around New Zealand, including Queen’s Counsel, by arrangement with Mr Griggs.
Cassandra acts for and advises employers, employees and one of New Zealand’s largest unions in relation to all employment matters, including in relation to mediation, collective bargaining, advising on employment agreements and statutory entitlements, personal grievances, restructuring advice and health and safety matters. She has particular expertise in advising clients in the health sector. She regularly appears in the Employment Relations Authority and has also appeared in the Employment Court and the Court of Appeal.
Cassandra’s general litigation practice covers a diverse range of civil and commercial disputes, encompassing advisory work as well as appearances as junior in most New Zealand courts and a number of tribunals.
Cassandra has a particular interest in medico-legal issues and animal law. She is the Vice President of the New Zealand Animal Law Association and an active member of both the Young Lawyers’ and Employment Law Committees of the Wellington Branch of the New Zealand Law Society. Cassandra also volunteers regularly with Community Law Wellington and Hutt Valley. She has led a number of seminars and events and published articles in the areas of employment, health and animal law.
